This Blog’s Name
A critic is a bundle of biases held loosely together by a sense of taste. – Whitney Balliet
This blog is one person’s take on randomly-selected internet-published poetry and is intended as a learning tool. Comments are definitely welcomed. Particularly comments pointing out where we are way off-base, or even somewhat off-base.
There is something parasitic about leeching onto and off the work of others in order to organize and feed our grasp on our own, but we’ll try not to let that bother us.
Criticism is a misconception: we must read not to understand others but to understand ourselves. – Emile Cioran
This discussion was about the difference between critiquing and reviewing.
How’s this for a blood-curdling quote?
“… with a review, you are taking your life in your hands by criticising what a poet has published as a finished product. Many poets have huge egos and will hold a bad review against you for the rest of their lives, and if they get the chance to take revenge, they will.”
Yikes!
Shouldn’t we just shut down this blog and get out while the getting is still good?
But wait, someone else says: “..there are different types of reviews: popular, critical, trade, and scholarly.”
In other words, the purpose of reviews differ. According to the intent of the reviewer.
This blog is a learning tool, and the purpose of any review posted here is EDUCATIONAL.
Hear that, all you stiletto-wielding vendetta-espousing poets out there? We’re entitled to the 501(c)3 equivalent of blood-soaked revenge exemption status.
Plus: We have no credentials! We know know pretty much diddly-squat about most things, including poetry and poetry criticism. So do us all a favor and consider the source before you get all mouth-foamy or anything unappealing like that.
